It's been a great start to our summer in La Jolla! The sun is out and the water is warming up everyday. Our tours have been full of animal sightings, everything from a few late in the season grey whales to our usual residents: the Bottlenose dolphins and sea lions.
On our tours on calm days we have been venturing into the Devil's Slide area in search of it's summer residents, the leopard sharks. They have been coming in by the dozen, enjoying the warm water as much as us! The caves are always an adventure and it's been great to show everyone all of the wildlife that spends time there. The Brandt's Cormorants have been busy building nests and within a few weeks we should be hearing the familiar chirping of their chicks.
One of our rarest animals has been seen multiple times in the last few weeks. We love our green sea turtles in La Jolla and it's always awesome to see them them popping up to breath as they graze along the sea grass meadows. We'd love to take you out on the water and show you all the beauty that La Jolla has to offer! You can always give us a call in the shop or book a tour through our website.

The swell is down, the sharks are back!

It's been a while, but today the swell is a lot smaller and we were able to see the Leopard Sharks! It is warm, air temp is 75, water is 70, summer is on its way, finally.

Bachelorette Kayak Party!

Saturday June 25th, 1:20 PM tour. Max (guiding) and Dom (taking pictures) had the chance to take Amy's bachelorette party on a guided tour to the caves; they obviously had a lot of fun, from the start going through the waves, at the caves watching to pelicans, cormorants and the waves breaking at the Cove, to the landing surfing in. Though they didn't get to enter the caves due to the high surf, it was a great tour. Congratulations Amy!

The Leopard Sharks are back

Our friendly sharks are finally back int he area! We saw them yesterday for the time this year. Totally harmless, the Leopard Sharks move in La Jolla Shores in the Spring to give birth. About 99% of the population we have are pregnant females or young ones. The females will be giving birth here, then rest and mate again. Their pregnancy lasts 10 months, and the pups are born alive.

Spent the Morning with the Beautiful Grey Whales

This morning on our 10:40am tour we had an unexpected visit from a few grey whales. We watched them play from a couple hundred feet away until they decided to dive right under our boats. We are always excited to interact with the incredible animals that visit our reserve, but this morning was extra special. They stayed around us for about 10 minutes and then cruised out to deeper waters, finally diving with flukes in the air!
